Parish History

Hawkesbury has had a Catholic parish since the founding of St. Alphonsus Liguori parish in 1883, but English-speaking Catholics longed to hear English sermons, receive sacraments, and worship in their native tongue.  Six businessmen grouped to accomplish this task.  One of the six, a young lawyer named Edmond Woods, had married a woman who spoke no French and had promised her that there would indeed be an English parish in this town.

After many years of petitioning and fund raising ground was broken on 7 May 1959 by our first Parish Priest, Fr. Peter Garland.  After construction was completed, the first Mass was held on 13 December 1959.

The success of our parish can be attributed to the constant work of our Parish Priests, the Parish Pastoral Council, the Ladies' Association, and various ministries.

Our humble little parish of 200 (now 80) registered families welcomes everyone to prayer.  Our parish vision is to be firmly committed in doing our part in fulfilling the mission given by Jesus Christ to his Church to go to people everywhere and make them his disciples (Page 186, "A Brief History and Parishes of the Archdiocese of Ottawa," Strasbourg:  Éditions du Signe, 2010).

Fr. Rick Lorenz, Pastor

My name is Fr. Rick Lorenz.  I began as pastor of St. Jude's Parish in Hawkesbury and Our Lady of Divine Love Parish in Pendleton on 1 June 2020.

After studying Philosophy at Dominican University College and Theology at St. Augustine's Seminary, I was ordained to the priesthood on 19 June 2015.   I served as vice rector for two years at St. Patrick's Basilica in Ottawa, and associate pastor for almost three years at Holy Redeemer in Kanata.  I have also served as a military chaplain with 33 Service Battalion since September 2017.  Before this assignment, I spent summers at CFB Goose Bay with the RCAF, CFB Shilo with the PPCLI and RCA, and CFB Esquimalt with the RCN.  I was also pleased to go to CFS Alert for Christmas 2013.

Before becoming a priest, I worked as a technical writer for 15 years.  During this time, I was a parishioner at St. Brigid's in Manotick and St. Isidore's in Kanata.  I also served with the Knights of Columbus, my professional organization, a political party, and my community association.  I like music, amateur radio and backpacking.  It's nice to pick up my tools again at my country parish.

I was born in Saskatoon, and my extended family lives in Western Canada.  I have two sisters and my mom was widowed in 2005.  But I have a lot of relatives:  my dad was one of ten, and my mom was the eldest of eleven.

I invite you to request Mass intentions; they unite me in a supernatural way to those whom you love.  It is a challenging time:  war, the economy, secularization, and after effects of the coronavirus.  But the land is beautiful, and I've been warmly welcomed and helped by many:  I'm happy and honoured to be here!
